Thornhill Tennis Club
Thornhill Tennis club is a popular tennis club located about two miles from the centre of Dewsbury.
With over 60 members of all ages and abilities we have an active social tennis programme and for the more competitive members we have men's , ladies , mixed , junior and intermediate teams within the Huddersfield Tennis League and also the Wakefield Tennis League.
We have three all weather tarmac courts and floodlights which were installed during April 2010
Our courts were also resurfaced and repainted for the 2013 season.
A potted history of Thornhill Tennis Club
founding, development and future aims
From club records it appears that tennis was first part of Thornhill Cricket Club (as it was known then) as far back as 1889 when the club changed it’s name to Thornhill Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club. However, it appears the first tennis club survived only until 1909.
Today’s Thornhill Tennis Club was established in October 1991 and the courts were completed in 1994.
The courts were officially opened in 1995 by Greg Rusedski who was well publicised at the time as having his family roots in Dewsbury. (We did give him an honorary life membership at the time but, unfortunately, he has not made use of this!)
Through the last 20 years the club has funded a number of developments to the facilities including floodlights, a club house, a practice wall, landscaping and a patio area.
We have developed and improved the standard of tennis played and two of our three competitive teams achieved promotion in the 2015 season. We encourage social tennis where anybody is welcome to join in.
We are proud at the way we have developed and encouraged our junior members in particular and our qualified coach and his assistants run regular well attended and much enjoyed sessions.
We need to continue to encourage, develop, support and keep our junior members and maintain a strong presence of young players who should be seen as the future and continuing success of the tennis club.
From a practical point of view we see that a realistic way of helping us to achieve this and encourage full usage of the courts is by providing improved facilities which includes floodlights.
